Fleetwood Mac Wiki

The City is a song written by Bob Welch and recorded by him with Fleetwood Mac for their 1973 album Mystery to Me. It expressed the disenchantment Welch felt with New York City at the time.

Welch explained in the sleeve notes of His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond Two (2006), which featured a rerecording of the song, that his fiancée had been mugged there and that his Fleetwood Mac bandmates were terrified to go out on the streets where there were numerous potholes and homelessness was rife. Welch then stated that he no longer felt this way about New York City as at 2006.

According to some sources, the 1982 Fleetwood Mac song Empire State was written as an apology to residents of New York offended by The City.
