Silver Springs is a song written by Stevie Nicks and recorded by her with Fleetwood Mac in 1976. Originally intended for inclusion on the album Rumours, it was left off due to space restrictions and instead appeared on the b-side of the album's lead single Go Your Own Way.
Nicks deeply resented this omission as she deeply loved the song but Mick Fleetwood insisted that either Silver Springs be replaced with I Don't Want to Know (which Nicks personally disliked) or she only have two songs on the album. Nicks ran out into the parking lot and screamed.
The song was performed live on the Rumours tour but slipped back into relative obscurity after this. It made news again in 1990 when Nicks left Fleetwood Mac when Mick Fleetwood refused to let her use the song for her solo compilation Timespace: The Very Best of Stevie Nicks.
Silver Springs finally appeared on an album when it was included on the 1992 4CD compilation 25 Years: The Chain and its 2CD edition. When the Rumours line-up of Fleetwood Mac reunited in 1997, the resulting live album, The Dance, included a performance of Silver Springs which ended with Nicks expressing her deep gratitude to the audience and describing it as "a great old song". This recording was released as a single.
In 2001 it appeared on the DVD-Audio edition of Rumours. The commentary featured Nicks expressing joy that "The couple is now back together" and Fleetwood saying "You can forgive me now Stevie."
It has been performed periodically on Fleetwood Mac tours ever since, and was used to close the shows on the 2009 Unleashed tour.
