Freedom is a song written by Stevie Nicks and Mike Campbell and recorded by Nicks with Fleetwood Mac for their 1990 album Behind the Mask (album).
Mike Campbell, at the time, was lead guitarist with Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. This outfit had worked with Nicks on a number of occasions. Campbell and Nicks had already written songs together that had featured on her solo albums Rock a Little (1985) and The Other Side of the Mirror (1989) which he played on, but to date this is the only song on a Fleetwood Mac album to afford a writing credit to Campbell who would ultimately join Fleetwood Mac in 2018.
The song was performed by the group at a concert for family and friends, parts of which were shown in the UK on Channel 4's Rock Steady. On the same programme, Nicks was asked whether the song was about Lindsey Buckingham. She admitted that while this was not consciously an inspiration, there was some reflection on their past relationship in the vitriolic lyric.
