Black Magic Woman is a song composed by Peter Green which was released as Fleetwood Mac's second single on March 29th 1968. The spine-chilling song marked the band's singles chart debut, peaking at #37 in their native United Kingdom but gained even greater renown when covered by Santana in 1970. This version peaked at #4 in the United States.
The original single was backed with a cover of Elmore James's The Sun is Shining.
The song remained part of Fleetwood Mac's live repertoire until 1974 and was reintroduced in 2018 in a slightly rewritten version with Stevie Nicks on vocals.
When Fleetwood Mac were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998, Peter Green joined Santana on stage to perform the song.
Bob Welch, who had sung the song at live shows during his time with Fleetwood Mac, brought out his own recording of the song on His Fleetwood Mac Years and Beyond Two (2006).
