Behind the Mask is the fifteenth studio album by Fleetwood Mac, released on April 1st 1990. It was their first full album with vocalist/rhythm guitarist Billy Burnette and their only one with lead guitarist/vocalist Rick Vito. It was also the last to feature Stevie Nicks until the live reunion album The Dance in 1997. She would not appear on another Mac studio album until Say You Will (2003).
Former member Lindsey Buckingham played acoustic guitar on the title track while future member Mike Campbell co-wrote the song Freedom with Nicks.
The album topped the UK charts and spawned a Canadian #9 hit in Save Me but the album and its singles charted less well overall elsewhere and while it was a moderate success it was not seen as being a major success. The band did nevertheless embark on a successful tour and managed to fill Wembley Stadium in August 1990 though by the end, Nicks, Vito and Christine McVie had all announced their intentions to leave.
